A new epistemological concept for the totality of the external context conditioning tacit knowledge
This article introduces the neologism holectoma as an original epistemological concept, defined as the integrated totality of the external context —physical, social, cultural, historical, linguistic, institutional, relational, and technological— that conditions, shapes, and makes possible the emergence, acquisition, and transmission of tacit knowledge in an individual, community, or organization. The term is built on three Greek roots: holo- (totality), ecto- (exterior), and -oma (complete systematic set), consistent with the terminological logic of contemporary omic sciences. The article justifies the conceptual need for the term by reviewing the genealogy of tacit knowledge from Aristotle to recent developments in generative AI, demonstrates that the main theorists of the field described the interior of tacit knowledge but none named its total exterior as an integrated system, and proposes the first applications of the concept in organizational management, professional training, and the epistemological limits of generative AI.

The study of tacit knowledge has over six decades of accumulated history. Since Michael Polanyi formulated his foundational sentence in 1966 —"We know more than we can tell"— philosophers, cognitive psychologists, sociologists, pedagogues, and organizational theorists have explored with increasing depth the nature of the implicit knowledge that guides competent human action. The result is a rich, branching literature that covers the interior of the phenomenon in considerable detail.
However, a systematic analysis of that literature reveals a notable absence: none of the great theorists of tacit knowledge named or systematically treated the total exterior of the phenomenon — the integrated set of external conditions that make it possible for a certain type of tacit knowledge to emerge, develop, transmit, and eventually be lost. Each author described parts of that exterior, but none conceptualized it as a complete system.
This article proposes the neologism holectoma to fill that conceptual gap. The term names, for the first time in an integrated manner, the totality of the external context conditioning tacit knowledge. Its construction is etymologically rigorous, conceptually necessary, and theoretically fertile.
Gilbert Ryle (1946, 1949) introdujo la distinción seminal entre knowing that (conocimiento proposicional) y knowing how (conocimiento práctico irreductible a proposiciones). Aristotle distinguished in the Nicomachean Ethics three types of knowledge: episteme (theoretical-demonstrative), techné (technical-productive), and phronesis, practical wisdom irreducible to explicit rules. It is the first documented precursor of the modern concept of tacit knowledge. Ludwig Wittgenstein, in the Philosophical Investigations (1953), argued that the meaning of language is anchored in shared "forms of life" and social practices that cannot be fully explicated. Gilbert Ryle (1946, 1949) introduced the seminal distinction between knowing that (propositional knowledge) and knowing how (practical knowledge irreducible to propositions).
In Personal Knowledge (1958) he developed a theory of personal knowledge underscoring the role of non-explicitable but constitutive tacit aspects of the cognitive process. In The Tacit Dimension (1966) he synthesized the concept in its best-known expression:
"We know more than we can tell."
La tabla siguiente sintetiza la laguna central: Harry Collins (2010) provided the most detailed taxonomy of tacit knowledge in sociological literature, distinguishing relational, somatic, and collective TK. Hubert Dreyfus (1980, 1999) demonstrated that skill acquisition progresses from conscious rule application to embodied tacit fluency. Nonaka and Takeuchi (1995) proposed the SECI model and the concept of ba as a knowledge emergence space. The following table synthesizes the central gap:
| TeóricoTheorist | Lo que describióWhat was described | Lo que no nombróWhat wasn't named |
|---|---|---|
| Polanyi | Interior inarticulable del saberInarticulable interior of knowing | El sistema externo que lo generaThe external system generating it |
| Collins | CT colectivo de la comunidadCommunity collective TK | La totalidad del contexto que la hace posibleThe totality of context making it possible |
| Dreyfus | El cuerpo como condición del saberBody as condition of knowing | El mundo externo completo donde operaThe complete external world it operates in |
| Nonaka | El ba como espacio específicoBa as specific space | La totalidad sistémica de todos los baThe systemic totality of all ba |
| Wittgenstein | Formas de vida como marco del lenguajeForms of life as linguistic framework | La totalidad integrada de esas formasThe integrated totality of those forms |
Holectoma (noun, epistemology / cognitive sciences): The integrated totality of the external context —physical, social, cultural, historical, linguistic, institutional, relational, and technological— that conditions, shapes, and makes possible the emergence, acquisition, and transmission of tacit knowledge in an individual, community, or organization. The holectoma is not the environment as a sum of parts, but as a complete system whose structure determines what can be known tacitly, how that knowledge is transmitted, and when it is irreversibly lost.
— Trujillo Montilla, D. (2026). Holectoma. Holomanagement PB LLC.El holectoma integra seis dimensiones. The holectoma integrates six dimensions. Their relative importance varies by tacit knowledge type, but none can be removed without altering the complete system.
The holectoma concept fundamentally reformulates the tacit knowledge loss problem: organizations don't lose TK because an expert employee leaves — they lose it by destroying or allowing the degradation of the holectoma that sustained their knowledge. This distinction has immediate practical consequences: knowledge retention programs focused exclusively on capturing individual knowledge are incomplete because they address the symptom. Effective management requires managing the holectoma: the relationships, spaces, practices, communities, and institutional conditions that made that knowledge possible.
In professional training, the concept reorients learning environment design. The right question is not "what content should professionals learn?" but "what holectoma must be built for the necessary tacit knowledge to emerge?" This reformulation leads to radically different design decisions: investing in communities of practice before courses, creating physical and relational spaces facilitating contact between novices and experts, and designing cycles of reflection on action (Schön, 1983) that allow partial articulation of implicit knowledge.
The reason generative AI cannot capture embodied and collective tacit knowledge is structural, not technical: AI cannot inhabit the holectoma that generates it. The holectoma is a system of external conditions including physical, social, relational, and bodily dimensions irreducible to text. A language model trained on text can learn the linguistic patterns emerging from certain holectomas, but cannot inhabit those holectomas or develop the type of knowledge that only emerges from active participation in them.

(arxiv, 2025; Acemoglu et al., 2026) There is also a documented paradox: generative AI attempts to capture tacit knowledge while simultaneously destroying the holectoma that generates it, reducing entry-level positions where TK is transmitted from experts to novices and disrupting intergenerational transmission pipelines. This paradox requires organizations to actively protect their holectomas even —and especially— when adopting AI tools.
The introduction of the holectoma concept reinforces the contextualist position in epistemology: knowledge is not only a property of individual minds but also a function of the external systems conditioning them. The question "what does X know?" is inseparable from "in what holectoma was X formed?" The holectoma also generates a research agenda that includes at least the following questions:
This article has proposed the neologism holectoma as an original epistemological concept filling a real gap in the tacit knowledge literature. The systematic review of the main theorists of the field —from Aristotle to the most recent developments in generative AI— demonstrates that all described aspects of the tacit knowledge exterior, but none named it as an integrated systemic totality.
Holectoma designates the integrated totality of the external context conditioning tacit knowledge. Its etymological construction is rigorous and consistent with contemporary omic sciences terminology. Its conceptual contribution is precise: it adds the level of systemic totality that prior concepts —ba, context, environment, community of practice— did not reach. The concept's implications are multiple and verifiable in organizational management, professional training, and the debate on generative AI's limits. The empirical agenda remains pending: the operationalization of the concept and its validation in case studies. This article is the starting point of that research.
